HOW CAN WE CREATE A EQUITABLE FUTURE FOR
USE ECONOMICS THAT WORKS
Fresh thinking in economics is urgently required to address
the most critical challenges of our time. The Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School brings together scholars from disciplines including economics, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, business and law. This brings multiple perspectives to bear on problems such as making the global financial system more robust and resilient; reinvigorating economic growth and innovation; addressing rising inequality; how to create a model of environmentally sustainable growth; and how economics should be taught to the next generation of leaders.
We found that just as early spinning machines took the jobs of middle-income craftsmen, today’s technological advances mean that nearly half of US jobs are at risk of automation, from the factory floor to the office. Job creation, education and training should focus on the hardest things to automate: human strengths, such as social interaction and creativity.
